- My project was both a volunteer project and a professional development project all rolled into one. For the volunteer aspect of my project, I was able to become a “Civilian Archivist” (term used by the National Archives for the volunteers in their volunteer program) to volunteer online to help the National Archives transcribe their older documents from cursive to print. For the professional development project, the goal was to practice my transcribing and reading old handwriting for my own Family History Research Business to keep those skills of mine sharp. However, the overall purpose of this project was to value, preserve and learn from historical documents.
There were several transcription projects that the National Archives has quite a few transcription projects for “Civilian Archives” to help with, for this project I choose to work on transcribing Revolutionary War Widow Pensions for the state of Connecticut for 30-50 hours. My goal was to help transcribe up to ten Pension Files at the beginning of my project.
